Anime is the Japanese version of the Western world of animation and the style is applied to almost all forms of Japanese animation. In Japan, they tend to use the word Anime to refer to all kinds of animated media including western animations. Yet in the western world, Anime is used to refer to animated material originating from Japan.

Traditionally, Anime is hand drawn, but with the advent of computers, more and more are created with CGI elements. But the bandwagon to jump on board has not been as radical or epic as the western studios. This shift from hand drawn to computer generated is still a work in progress in Japan.

The regular and plentiful supply of Anime is really what separates Anime from other animations around the world. With such a wealth of titles, there is something for everyone. From the family oriented titles from Studio Ghibli through to the violent and sexual behaviour of films such as Legend of the Overfiend. Through the enormous library of titles, Anime has attracted an enormous fan base not only in Japan, but across the world.

A lot of Japanese Anime are animated versions of popular Japanese Manga’s. Again, something that separates them from the rest of the world’s animated media. Manga can be seen as the Japanese version of what the western world would call comics. Amazingly, Manga is more popular in Japanese society than Anime and makes up a tremendous amount of the book industry over there. In fact, Manga made over $4.4 Billion US Dollars in sales in 2007 alone, something that western comic book industry can only dream of.

Like Anime, Manga is more prevalent and common within Japan. In fact it’s regular to see a bunch of people crowding around local convenience stores browsing the wide selection of Manga available. The wide selection then also caters for the wide range of tastes such as Pokemon and Doraemon to the more adult orientated content.
