Beach-Safe Food Storage and Preservation

Food Storage and Preservation While Outdoors or At the Beach – A party is no party at all if there is neither food nor drink. The same is true in a beach party or even in a simple leisurely weekend planned to spend at the beach. Food is always among the necessities and must bring essentials. Among the most common problems people encounter with regards to bringing food outdoors or at the beach, is the proper way of storing the food and how to preserve it especially if you are planning to stay overnight or for two days or more. Here are some helpful tips on the proper way of storing and preserving food for outdoor picnics, camping or partying at the beach.

Food Storage Containers for Warmer weather – The cooler is one of the most basic essentials used in storing and preserving food consumed outdoors. Coolers are particularly ideal for food that needs refrigeration like meat and processed meat products and dairy products. It is also ideal for food items and beverages that taste better when cool like soft drinks and beer. A food cooler basically features polyurethane foam used to insulate chunk or blocks of ice or dry ice. Large and good quality coolers can stores ice cubes for a week. There are also smaller coolers which you can plug into the power supply of your SUV or camper.

Plastic zip-lock bags and vacuum sealed bags are the favorite for storing and preserving sandwiches, chips, cereals and similar dry foods for later consumption. These keep your food fresh and prevent contamination of outside substances. Snap-on lid containers and plastic containers/ bottles are most commonly used with food in liquid sauces to avoid messy spillage. Disposable containers are fast becoming popular as it offers the convenience of not toting bags of empty food containers home. There are different types of disposable food containers now available in the market. There are even food containers made from potato peel which are environment-friendly.

Consider this – When planning your next party how many people are expected to attend? Plan accordingly for food storage. Larger coolers are readily available and relatively affordable. You should also consider the types of food you are bringing to the beach. For a beach party, it is ideal to bring in food that does not require complex preparations. Ready-to-eat food is popular for beach parties. Many people also connect the beach to barbeque and kebabs. Plan accordingly with plenty of ice for your meat to stay fresh in your cooler until time for the barbeque. If you bring a certain type of food that is meant to consume in several parts of servings, it will be better if you store it separately into different containers and label it as such to avoid spoilage. Avoid storing different kinds of food in the same container. Food grouping is also a good suggestion.

Warm temperature is the main factor that causes food to spoil, and the beach is a place where hot temperature is constant. It will be better if you place your cooler or insulated basket in a shaded spot such as a tree or umbrella shade. Proper hygiene is also a must in preserving your food. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before you prepare or serve your foods. One important reminder when partying at the beach is to be responsible in disposing of your trash, food leftovers and containers in proper waste bins. Leave no footprint.
