Customs And Rituals Followed In A Buddhist Funeral
Buddhist funeral rites and rituals are filled with religious significance for Buddhists. The ceremonies carried out during the Buddhist funeral are believed to set the person’s soul free from the chains of life and enable it to find a transformed and elevated life thereafter where it gets closer to enlightenment.
The Buddhist funeral ceremonies which end with cremation in most cases, are done by monks with the help of the bereaved family. After a person has died, Buddhist monks chant from the religious scriptures which are expected to free the positive energies of the soul. While the chanting is on, the deceased is prepared for the funeral service and for visitors to pay last respects, so that there is no decay even if the final rites are delayed. Once the body is washed, it is placed along with candles, bouquets and incense in a casket along with a photograph of the deceased person.
The Abhidharma, a sacred Buddhist scripture is read everyday by visiting Buddhist monks during the funeral period even when the cremation is deferred to wait for the visitors from far away places.
On the occasion of the funeral, Buddhist monks perform the final rituals and their chief delivers a short speech in honour of the dead person focusing on his achievements in life and consoling the aggrieved relatives that death is destiny. The Pansakula, an important ritual that is expected to pass on blessings and positive energies to the departed’s soul is carried out during the final chanting while a white shroud is being wrapped around the casket.
Before the cremation, a family member or closest kin has to say something about the deceased. After the cremation, a light feast is arranged for the people gathered at the funeral.
Some differences in the specific rituals may be found in different cultures, but these are the important rituals followed during a Buddhist funeral in many countries like Tibet, Thailand, and China by the followers of the faith.
