Embracing The Art Deco Design For Your Home

In the art world, styles go in and out of fashion all the time. The same applies for Art deco which has been popular since the 20’s and is still going strong today.

What comes to mind when Art Deco is brought up is the retro, colorful and modern look. Eclectic and artistic are no alien definitions as well. The common materials for an Art Deco design are stainless steel, lacquered wood with inlay and aluminum. Indeed, contemporary materials perfect for the modern designs. Decorations that bespeak of Art Deco are colorful. The bolder the colors, the better for the theme. Sure, earth tones and neutral shades also abound, but these hues are more utilized for the walls. For a more artsy finish, use metallic paints or accent the wall corners on the ceiling side with a stencil. Designs can vary from ziggurats, surreys to lotus and scarab. Wallpapers are also acceptable with these designs if you don’t want to do a painting job. Botanical patterns or floral together with geometrical patterns are also popular Art Deco designs.

Speaking of bright and bold colors, Art Deco is rich in shades of red, black, pink, silver and green. As for the neutrals, beige and cream are top choices. Furnishings can also be in orange, yellow and crimson. See, everything in Art Deco screams ‘Attention!’ What an original design to work with.

Retro furnishings are also typical of an Art Deco design. Furniture pieces have the trademark rounded corners and woodwork. The use of contrasting colors in pairing accessories with furniture is a great way to bring out the theme. For instance, throw pillows in red go well with a barrel-shaped black leather sofa with black painted metal legs. Very cool, isn’t it? Add the sight of highly lacquered chairs, furnishings with a velvet covering, tub chairs and oriental artifacts, and the room becomes an Art Deco paradise.

Decorate with area rugs with geometric patterns or those in bold colors. A black and white checkerboard floor or a highly polished and lacquered floor will look even better. Area rugs will help bring together the colors and patterns present in the room, while also adding decorative element to the living space.

Window treatments were plain or non-existent in the art deco era. If you must have window treatments, opt for simple blinds. Place unframed mirrors on the walls around the room will make the room seem bigger. Colored or stained glass mirrors are also classic art deco. For your lighting, consider fan and bowl lighting fixtures that can be found in local hardware stores. Use table lamps with shades that are fringed at the base. Or go for chandeliers with the sunburst motif.

Have wall hangings such as 1920’s inspired posters and photographs. In fact, any vintage or retro items are Art Deco ready decorations for display.

Enjoy this fun and original design. Your home will look one in a million.

Home Decorators love to use rugs, to finish a room. This one in particular is proving popular; Dynamic Rugs Brilliant Collection.
