Learn How To Maintain Trolling Motor Parts
If you own a boat that you regularly take out on fishing or leisure trips then you may have fitted, or at least be aware of, trolling motors. These are an electric version of a boat engine that is now seen as having a number of merits as compared to the traditional gasoline motor. Perhaps the biggest advantage is the sound, or lack of it. Most gas motors are very noisy; a trolling motor will produce almost no sound. Also, another important factor is the environmental issues that we cannot escape from today. It is known that by using a fossil fuel such as gasoline we are contributing to the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. If you are going to have many years of enjoying your boat then you will need to understand the workings and maintenance of the various Trolling Motor Parts.
To care for an electric boat motor is not the same as the traditional motor; it needs an altogether different set of checks. The more time you spend learning the maintenance techniques the better the engine will function.
If a motor fails on you when you are miles off of shore then the outcome can be disastrous. The time it takes to learn the basics of the trolling motor and its various parts can mean the difference between being lost at sea and having a happy fishing trip.
To start with you will need to know how trolling motors are powered. Typically a boat engine would require you to fill it up with gas at regular intervals. With an electric motor you require a battery charger. When the power gets low you need to top up the engine with electricity. This can be done when docked, or onboard when at see; it will depend upon you and your requirements. Be sure to follow the charging instructions correctly as otherwise you may damage the motor batteries.
When planning any excursion at sea be sure that you check the motor over before lifting anchor. It is all too easy for old fishing lines as well as weeds to get wrapped around the propeller shaft. If you did not notice and then tried to start the motor, the costs of the repairs can be very high.
Any trolling engine will come with a maintenance manual. This is not an item to just store away, you need to become familiar with every chapter. Learn the names and terminology for the various motor parts. This will allow you to quickly identify a problem and then make the right purchase of a replacement part if required. Any boat engine will need a good level of maintenance.
When the batteries are being charged it is wise to keep an eye on their progress; especially when charging offshore. It can occur that the charger puts too much electricity into the cells which results in damage. Typically they will need replacing every few years.
If you make the effort to understand your maintenance and operating manual in full then a trolling motor should work for thousands of hours without a problem developing. If an issue does arrive and you need to find a new battery or prop shaft then the best place to do so is online. There are a number of websites through which you can pick up boating equipment and spares.
