Most Common Luxury Linens Thread Count Scams.

Thread-count is an essential, concise figure to define the quality grade of a cotton fabric.

Let’s leave all the technicality about threadcount aside. That’s not really important at the moment.

Marketers blatantly advertise an high thread count to sell barely decent linens as “luxury bedding”. A gold rush to offer the highest thread count is shaking the whole market. Thread count inflation shows figures growing from 320TC to 600TC than up to 1000TC even reaching some barely credible 1800TC! 280TC seemed to be a pretty good quality grade only a few years ago while today it doesn’t sound so nice at all.

Has really fine linens quality improved that much in just a few years?

Not at all !

1000 thread count is the highest weave that can be technically achieved. Period!

Moreover the highest threadcounts can only be achieved using premium quality, extra long staple yarns. Only a few mills worldwide have developed proprietary technology to twist and weave those fine yarns into exceptional fabrics. So this kind of world class fabrics are coming at an high cost.

And what about all those bed sheets available online or at retail stores showing incredibly high counts for ridiculously low prices? An explanation can be found as follows:

1) The thread count is true but it has been achieved using poor quality raw cotton fibers, thus giving thick uneven yarns that are woven into heavy fabrics manufactured into blanket-weight sheets. Definitely no good for sleeping.

2) Threadcount may be misrepresented using the European metrics instead of the American standard units.

If the price seems to good to be true, well, it probably isn’t.

Finally, even touching and using the actual product on your bed you will not notice any substantial difference among a 500 or 600 thread count and a 1000TC. In fact fabric quality is not improving proportionally to threaccount numbers.

Price indeed can be double, triple or even quadruple for a real 1.000TC.

It is big ticked purchase that should be carefully evaluated. In reality it is not worth the premium price tag.
