There have been plenty of alien invasion movies made in the last fifty years or so. Many people will argue that they are largely a metaphor to explore our collective fears of mutual nuclear destruction. But as we move towards a world free from the fear of indiscriminate atomic bombings, can these metaphors still pack the same entertainment punch? The remake of a classic, “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” proves the answer is a resounding “yes.”

It’s well known that a lot of of the science fiction, extraterrestrial incursion type movies in the fifties and sixties were metaphors for the ever rising and overhanging risk of sheer devastation due to nuclear war. The original movie addressed this straightforwardly, as the invading aliens came to give Earthlings a caution to either end fighting or face the wrath of the aliens. True to the real thing, the aliens came as representatives of a planetary partnership of sorts. But the Earthlings were in danger of not being incorporated due to their evil habits. In the initial movie, the heinous habits were combat and nuclear stockpiling. In the remake, the bad habits are environmental maltreatment of our own planet.

Our fable starts out with several scientists being rounded up by some armed forces or government employees, we’re not sure which. They aren’t told the correct rationale, only that there is an approaching dilemma, and the government officials aren’t sure what to make of it. The scientists are astonished to find out that there is some thing hurtling towards Earth, and if it isn’t stopped, it will straightforwardly destroy everything.

They all brace for collision, and of course nothing happens. The entity turns out to be a huge space craft. And as the spokesperson exits the space craft, (and is customarily shot by some trigger happy soldier) we meet the infamous Gort. The gigantic robot who is the emissary’s protector. They take the envoy to a management hospital, where he is to be interrogated.

They get a few answers out of him, but he isn’t here to satisfy questions. He is here on a fact discovering mission. Is the Earth worth saving, or not? This is his mission, and centered on how he is treated when he first arrives, his inborn answer is that the Earth should be given a bright start. And by giving the Earth a fresh start, he means to eradicate all the people, and let the Earth gradually repopulate itself. Not good news for the current Earthlings, to be sure.

But a strange thing happens to this seemingly purely rational extraterrestrial from who knows where. The various people that he meets on his run from the establishment convinces him that Earth folks are fairly decent, on an individual level. He concludes that since folks are good, we merit a second chance. But unfortunately, events have been set into motion which he may be powerless to stop. He tries for a compromise, one that may be inopportune, to say the least, but is much better than sheer devastation. This remake stays fairly true to the real thing, yet introduces a few new elements. All in all, it’s worth seeing, but not worthy of a place in your own private library. This one is undeniably a rental.
