Puppy Meal Aggression, Part 3
- Stroke and pet your puppy at the same time as he’s having meal and at the same time speak to him in a calming tone. Everything you’re doing at that point is showing your puppy that this is a good thing for you to be in the vicinity.
- Stand at a distance your puppy is comfortable with, then slowly decrease this distance over time. You could flick a few treats in (or close to) the cup as you little by little reduce the distance.
- Put the pet’s bowl down with nothing in it, your dog will look back at you as though you are mad. He’ll then plainly beg you to come over and fill his cup.
- Feed your puppy as usually but hold back a few pieces of his meal. At the time when he is finished licking the cup, he’ll look back up at you, then you could come over and give him the remaining meal.
- Drop a few of your pet’s highly preferred treats into his cup each time you go past it. After a while of this your pet will welcome the sight of you coming close to the cup.
- Once your puppy is having meal, call him over to you, once he gets to you reward him, make this worth his while then let him back to the foodstuff bowl.
- At the same time as you are getting ready your dog’s food put him in a down-stay or sit position, just release him from your command when you have put his bowl down. By doing that you’re controlling feeding time and establishing (or re-establishing) your role as your dog’s leader.
- Do it with the other relative on that technique. Put your pet in his collar and leash and have him sit with your helper at the time you prepare the foodstuff. When you are prepared release your pet and allow him his meal. Again you are controlling the situation.
- Attempt the “Trade Up Method”. What you do is remove the food or toy your pet is defending, and replace this one with anything better. You may use an obedience command such as “give” or “leave it” to embolden your puppy to release the precious resource he’s protecting. Then you take such resource (the food or toy) and give the trade up item to the dog. As soon as your puppy has finished with the new item, you could then present back the resource you took away. This method proves to your puppy that he’ll get something great for giving something up, it’ll recondition his thinking.
- Whenever you are with your dog have him in a pinch or prong collar with a leash connected. Whenever he demonstrates any symptoms of puppy meal belligerence you instantaneously carry out a correction to your puppy by snapping on the leash. What this does to your pet is build a negative association to the act of his meal defending antics.
Good luck with the training efforts.
