Restoring The Planet Through Carbon Offset
As the world tries to cope with the serious threats posed by air-borne pollutants and greenhouse gases, carbon offset is providing an incentive to motivate governments and organizations to keep carbon emissions within prescribed limits.
Carbon offset is a way of reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases by using different means like sustained reforestation initiatives, green and renewable energy supply etc. The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement signed by most nations in 2005 puts caps on emission by member countries on the basis of whether they are emerging or developed, which in turn determines emissions by different sectors in each of these nations.
The Protocol makes it mandatory for industries emitting above the permitted limit of carbon dioxide to bring down their emissions to safe levels, or they must buy carbon credits certificates which can be traded in the market, or alternatively pay a charge for the emissions, which is known as carbon tax. Carbon credits, which were introduced prior to carbon offset, are the most preferred and cheap alternative for manufacturing businesses releasing more than the permitted limit of greenhouse gases, with one credit equal to one tonne of carbon dioxide emitted into the air. Large organisations are catching up with the global carbon-neutral movement and buying carbon credits to impress customers, investors and corporate partners.
Another novel instrument, carbon offset, has paved the way for an excellent economic opportunity, particularly in the developing countries, as the system provides smooth funding for eco-friendly projects that are created to help reduce the overall carbon footprint on the planet. It therefore helps in promoting environmental projects concerned with to reforestation, conservation of resources, and clean energy choices like tidal energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc.
Even individuals are more and more using the carbon offset scheme to reduce their carbon footprint and are advocating this method to others as well. Carbon offsets are available for purchasing online through many providers, but it should be checked that the provider is actually putting money into meaningful carbon reduction initiatives.
Carbon offset is a very effective way to protect out planet but we must also remember that making small alterations in our daily lives can be of immense help in reducing environmental destruction. We should adhere to certain fundamental practices like switching off lights and other electronic appliances when not needed, making use of low-energy bulbs and LED lighting, and going for cleaner fuels like biodiesel.
Carbon offset is not yet a popular word for an average person. Mass awareness on the issue through extensive education is needed to bring us some steps closer to a clean and healthy environment.
