Undertakers, also known as Funeral Directors, are experts who manage activities and services related to funerals. Given below are a few of the important skills and personal qualities that undertakers should possess to rise in their job.
An undertaker should be active and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he has to be available 24 hours a day. He should be prepared to work away from his office as the task requires him to be at the place where his services are required.
To become an undertaker, a person must be able to communicate well and should accommodate the viewpoints of others. People from various cultures, religions and traditions as well as those of any age will have to be managed by him with equal ease. An understanding and caring attitude will be of excellent help in this profession. However, he should be emotionally strong and not become shaken by other people’s sorrow, so that he can offer psychological support to others.
Undertakers should be serious and dignified by nature, but should not look gloomy or morose, as this may intensify the grief of the family members of the deceased.
By nature, undertakers should be broad minded. They should be willing to honour the traditions and beliefs of all religions and must be knowledgeable in this field. As various people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is advantageous to have understanding of these.
A good undertaker will naturally possess good management abilities and organisation skills. Many services will have to be organized by the undertaker and this will require good communication and managerial skills from the undertaker.
As the undertaker will be in charge of getting all clearances and adhering to all regulations with respect to the ceremony, he will need to be well versed in such procedures and legal formalities. He must also be conscious of the administrative procedures to be followed for obtaining insurance claims, death certificates etc.
Lastly, an undertaker must know driving and must possess a valid driving license, as he may have to drive hearses and limousines.
