Three Key Causes Of Female Yeast Infection And How To Prevent It

If a woman gets a yeast infection there are a lot of over the counter drug based treatments she can choose from to treat it. But some women are unhappy with how effective these are and they only treat the symptoms not the root cause. A better reaction might be to learn what causes a yeast infection and deal with that to prevent them in the first place.

There are several cause of yeast infections, some are hard to control whereas others are easy to make changes in order to prevent the infection. A brief example of triggers you can affect are diabetes – a high blood sugar level means the yeast has plenty of sugar to feed on and grow. Antibiotics – this drug often kills all bacteria even the healthy or good ones that are what control the growth of the fungus that causes a yeast infection. Wet or tight clothing – the ideal environment for an infection is warmth and moistness, so wet or tight clothing creates the perfect breeding grounds.

Menstruation – Every month a women deal with changing hormones, and a woman on her period can also have increased acidic levels making it more yeast infection friendly.

Pregnancy: Though this is a time for celebration and joy as well as the other discomforts a pregnant woman has to endure, being more likely to get a vaginal yeast infection is another. Again this is due to the ever fluctuating hormones and tends to occur in the third trimester. When looking for treatment pregnant women should always discuss options with a doctor first.

Menopause is another key time in a woman’s life when the hormonal balance is upset which could give the fungus the opportunity to overgrow. However interestingly there is no actual proof of a direct relationship between menopause and a yeast infection.

Of course you do not have to swear off ever having children just to avoid yeast infections but understanding it is about hormonal and chemical imbalance means you can look into ways to minimize the upset in your body these situations cause.
