If you hear the wailing sirens and see a red truck rushing by with flashing lights, then you know that somewhere there is an outbreak of fire. Fire trucks transport fire fighters and fire fighting equipments to the place of an outbreak of fire, an accident or a disaster. Fire trucks are popularly known as fire engines. A few decades ago, fire trucks used to whiz by with loud clanging of bells.
The color of the fire trucks are usually bright red though there are other colors given to it. There are the yellow colored fire trucks that you find in the airport. So also you find yellow colored fire trucks assisting in dousing forest fires. Fire trucks are manufactured in different sizes. It can, at the least, seat five firefighters. The fire truck has a two way radio to communicate. Some fire trucks have a hydraulic system with which the ladders are extended to reach high. This is normally useful when there are tall buildings involved in the fire or accidents. Fire trucks carry a variety of tools with which one can break down doors or pull down a wall with hooks. Some offer emergency medical aid while there are others which act as a rescue units. Fire trucks are also active in assisting in incidents of building collapse and accidents. It is not as though that only fire trucks are involved in combating fire, aircrafts and boats too are used in fire fighting.
In the ancient times, fire trucks were actually water pumping devices on wheels that were drawn by horses. But times have changed. Fire trucks have transformed into a well equipped modernized emergency vehicle. Fire fighting has become a skilled professional job. Fire trucks with mounted water tank are available. The trucks have long hose pipes which they use to pump water and to spray on the fire. Draft water suction provide in some fire trucks can be used to suck out water from external sources. These days building, town and city planning insists on availability of fire hydrant or water hydrant. They are handy during such needs. If there are local water sources such as stream, river, tank or lake, these too come in handy. The services provided by the fire trucks and fire fighters are of immense importance to safety and security of people.
Fire trucks may have changed. But firefighters will always be the heroes that we’ve known of.
